The musical opportunities listed below are ones of potential interest to MCYO members due to their focus on orchestral instruments. Most of the programs chosen for the listing are day programs in the Maryland suburban area or residential programs on the East Coast; some residential programs in other geographic areas have also been included due to their popularity, excellence, or uniqueness. The list was derived from several sources: programs in which MCYO members have participated in previous summers, those which were suggested by various MCYO personnel, or those which sent us brochures or were named in other listings. This list is not meant as a recommendation nor as a comprehensive list, but as a growing compilation of some options. Be sure to check specific information.

ArtsAbroad, based Falls Church, VA. www.ArtsAbroad.orgPrague Conservatory + Central European Tour: This program is especially geared toward high school students or recent graduates who intend to be university music majors or seriously continue musical studies. We will have a two week workshop at the Prague Conservatory to focus on performance, music theory, and music history. Private lessons and master classes will be given by conservatory staff, who are usually professional musicians in Prague ensembles. A recital at the end of the workshop in a beautiful concert hall will feature the piece you’ve been working on! Afterward, an intensive music history tour will take us to Vienna, Salzburg, Munich, Leipzig, and Dresden. We will attend many performances, including the Munich Opera Festival.International Band and Orchestra Camp: This program is open to any high school student. We’ll begin this exciting adventure with a tour to Prague, Vienna and Salzburg, three beautiful cities with great musical histories. We will visit famous performance halls and enjoy a concerts. Part of the tour will include exploring the Bavarian Alps and Neuschwanstein Castle (the model for Disney!) and cruising an underground river and caves in the Czech Republic. After the tour, we will settle in a small Czech forest town for a 10 day international band or orchestra camp with full days of rehearsals, lessons and concerts. Free time and evenings will be spent enjoying the outdoors with hiking, swimming, talent shows and campfires. What better way to spend the summer than making friends from around the world, seeing amazing music history sights, and playing great music!

The GW Summer Piano & Chamber Music Institute invites middle, high school, and college students to study with faculty-artists from the GW Department of Music and esteemed guest artists from outside the university. The Institute immerses students in a rigorous piano and strings curriculum at the university level, leaving them with a motivational and inspirational musical experience they will soon not forget.

Now in its third year, the Institute provides a carefully structured curriculum from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Each day students are given a variety of musical activities over the course of the program. Each week, students will have: lessons with our resident faculty; scheduled, monitored practice time; observed rehearsal time for ensemble repertoire; coaching sessions; studio and master classes; concerts by faculty and outside guests; learning trips at Washington, DC landmarks; and seminar sessions on a broad palate of topics including music theory, performance practice, history, philosophy, and aesthetics.

Peabody Bass Works. websiteProvides bass students with unique learning, community, and performance opportunities on the historic Baltimore campus of the Peabody Institute. Building on the success of Peabody Bass Works 2012, PBW 2013 will once again feature bass orchestra and small ensemble work, group lessons, and special classes and events for all participants. Bassists from age 6 to 18 at all ability levels, who have completed at least one year of bass instruction, are automatically eligible and accepted into the Young Bassists Division. UM Summer Youth Music Camp,Founded in 2003, the University of Maryland Summer Youth Music Camp a week-long day camp for band, string, and vocal musicians entering grades 5-10. Students at all proficiency levels are invited to join us for a week of musical enrichment, growth, and new opportunities. To this end, the camp is designed to accomplish the following goals:-provide participants with heightened musical experiences to enhance school and/or private instruction-develop musicianship and advance instrumental and vocal technique through ensemble and solo performance-offer elective classes that will promote awareness of multiple methods for expressing music-bring together students from throughout the Baltimore/Washington metropolitan area to share a unique musical experience


To this end, the following experiences are offered for each student:-large ensemble rehearsals in either a band, orchestra or choir conducted by University of Maryland faculty-small group lessons and sectionals taught by outstanding K-12 faculty from throughout Maryland-participation in at least three elective music classes-daily performances by university faculty and professional musicians-performance in the Clarice Smith Performing Arts CenterDetails at website.

Washington Brass Brass Boot Camp, Potomac, MD, 202-533-1861, websiteThe Boot Camp is an intensive week of instruction, masterclasses, theory, small and large ensemble training and supervised practice for trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium and tuba players. Accomplished teacher and player faculty will be on hand running rehearsals and coaching sessions, participating in masterclasses and performing on faculty recitals. The dates for the summer program correspond to the week leading up to major placement auditions in the area and serve as a way for students to get their chops back in shape before returning to school.
